The Woodlark - SA & Piano (with optional Percussion)
In this delightful poem Gerard Manley Hopkins describes a game of hide and seek with a woodlark, followed by the bird’s own descriptions of the joy of flying. Throughout he captures the elusive cadence of the woodlark's song in the rhythm of the words.
The musical setting mirrors the poem with playful interchange between the two voice parts and the piano, rhythmic vibrancy and moments of soaring lyricism.
For two-part upper voice choir and piano, with optional percussion for three players, this work was commissioned by Xavier College, Kew, for the Burke Hall and Kostka Hall Choirs, who gave the premiere performance at Hamer Hall, Melbourne in 2019.
